Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for sweating well beyond what's needed to regulate body temperature — most commonly under the arms, though it can also affect the hands, feet, nose, neck or hairline. At Amara Clinic Dublin we treat it with anti-wrinkle injections placed directly into the affected area, which block the nerve signal to the sweat glands. It's one of the medical, rather than cosmetic, uses of anti-wrinkle injections — like our teeth-grinding (bruxism) treatment — and is assessed differently to a facial treatment.

The underarm is by far the most common area we treat, but anti-wrinkle injections can also be used for excessive sweating of the hands, feet, nose, neck and hairline. Your doctor will assess your specific area of concern at consultation and confirm whether it's suitable for treatment.

The injections block the nerve signals that trigger the sweat glands in the treated area, so they stop overproducing sweat. It doesn't affect sweat glands elsewhere in the body, and it doesn't stop your body regulating its temperature overall — the effect is localised to the treated area.

Our doctor examines the area of concern and, where useful, may perform a simple test to map out exactly where the overactive sweat glands are (a sweat profile of the area) — this ensures the injections are placed precisely where they're needed. Assessment takes up to around 20 minutes.

A series of small injections are placed across the treatment area — typically both underarms — taking around 20–25 minutes in total. Most clients rarely report it as uncomfortable; it's a similar sensation to other anti-wrinkle injections, brief and well tolerated without sedation.

You'll typically notice the full effect within 2–4 weeks. Results are longer-lasting than facial anti-wrinkle treatment — anywhere from 5–9 months is typical for hyperhidrosis, though this varies from person to person and is discussed at your review.

Most healthy adults with bothersome excessive sweating in the underarms, hands, feet, nose, neck or hairline are suitable, confirmed at an in-person assessment. It isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people with certain neuromuscular conditions, active infection at the injection site, known allergy to the treatment, or under-18s. Pricing starts from €500 for repeat patients. Because the dose needed depends on the size of the area and how much it's affected, first-time treatment is individually assessed and quoted at your consultation once your doctor has examined the area — there's no obligation to proceed after a consultation.

As with any anti-wrinkle injection, the most common effects are minor redness, swelling or tenderness at the injection sites, which usually settle quickly. Some people notice a temporary increase in sweating elsewhere on the body (compensatory sweating) while the treated area adjusts — this is a recognised, usually mild and temporary effect, discussed at your consultation.

The same aftercare as any anti-wrinkle injection applies: avoid touching or massaging the treated area, don't lie flat for four hours, and skip strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for at least 24 hours — worth bearing in mind for underarm treatment specifically, since heat and exertion are exactly what trigger sweating.
