Acne treatment in Dublin — for the right problem

Active breakouts, the brown and red marks they leave, and true scarring are three different problems. They need three different treatments, and it is easy to buy the wrong one.

Almost everyone who comes to us about acne describes it as one condition. It rarely is. There are active breakouts, caused by congestion and inflammation happening now. There are the flat brown or red marks left behind after a spot clears, which are pigment and blood vessels rather than damage. And there is genuine scarring, where the skin has lost structure and the surface is pitted or uneven. They look related in the mirror. They respond to completely different things.

That distinction decides where your money goes. Marks usually fade with pigment-led treatment and time, though how much and how quickly varies a great deal between people. Scars generally do not fade on their own, and need collagen stimulation to lift the floor of the indentation. Active breakouts need congestion cleared and inflammation calmed, and treating the wrong layer is a common reason people tell us nothing has worked.

So we measure before we treat. A VISIA scan images your skin across visible, UV and cross-polarised light, which separates surface redness from deeper pigment and shows the porphyrins associated with congestion. It also tells us your skin type, which matters more than most people expect — some light-based treatments are unsuitable for deeper skin tones, and that has to be established before anything is booked, not after. You see the result on screen and we build the plan around it.

Common questions

Which treatment do I need for acne?

It depends on which of the three problems you have, which is why the assessment comes first. Broadly: active congestion and breakouts respond to HydraFacial extraction and BioRePeel; the flat marks left behind are usually treated with laser or IPL, where suitable for your skin type; and true pitted scarring needs EXION RF microneedling to stimulate collagen underneath. Many people need more than one, in a deliberate order.

What does acne treatment cost at Amara?

The VISIA skin assessment is free. From there: a HydraFacial starts at €140; BioRePeel is €159 on its own or €120 added to a HydraFacial in the same visit; laser and IPL are €275 for a full face or €150 for a small single area, plus a €50 patch test before your first session; and EXION microneedling starts at €350 for the face, with radiofrequency alone from €250. Acne almost always needs a course, and we will give you the honest total at the assessment rather than after you have started.

Is laser or IPL safe for my skin tone?

Not always, and this is the single most important thing to establish before booking. Light-based treatments target pigment, so in deeper skin tones they can carry a real risk of causing more pigmentation rather than clearing it — and post-acne marks are common in exactly those skin types. That is what the patch test is for: it is a safety screen, not an admin fee. If your skin type makes laser or IPL a poor choice, we will say so at the assessment and treat the marks another way.

Can you treat severe or cystic acne?

Not on our own. Moderate to severe inflammatory and cystic acne is usually a prescription problem, and the right first stop is your GP or a dermatologist — clinic treatments alone will underperform and cost you money in the meantime. What we do well is congestion and mild to moderate breakouts, and the marks and scarring left once the active phase is under control.

Will my acne scars go completely?

No treatment removes acne scarring entirely, and anyone promising that is overselling. What collagen stimulation does is lift and soften the indentations so the skin catches the light more evenly, which is what makes scarring visible in the first place. Results vary considerably between people and depend on the type and age of the scarring — we would rather set that expectation now than at your third session.

How long before I see a difference?

Congestion and breakouts usually improve fastest, often within a few weeks of a course starting. Marks fade over months rather than weeks, because pigment clears slowly. Scarring is the slowest of the three: collagen remodelling continues for months after a microneedling course finishes, so the assessment at three months tells you more than the mirror at three weeks. Individual results vary.

I have already tried everything from the pharmacy. Is a clinic any different?

It depends on which problem you have, and the scan answers that in thirty minutes. Over-the-counter routines act on the skin surface, so they can help congestion and do very little for pigment or structure — if your marks or scarring are the issue, a clinic reaches layers a topical product does not. If the scan shows your routine is simply the wrong one for your skin, we will fix the routine and save you the treatment.
